In the 1990’s hip hop made its mark in the popular charts in the form of gangsta rap, although teenagers
thought it was cool new music which was made in their era for their generation, the start of hip hop originated in
New York way back in the early half of the 1970’s through the MC who used to introduce the DJ on to stage and keep
the crowd entertained in between songs. It progressed into what is known now as rapping, by 1979 hip hop had
started to make an impact and had began to feature in America’s mainstream popular music charts. In England however
it was the 1990’s which saw hip hop and rap music take off.
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air had been popular on American TV for a number of years and had been featured on British
TV, it was the start of that show Will Smith along with his friend DJ Jazzy Jeff that released the song Summer
Time, which was a chilled out summer time tune, people loved it, teenagers loved Will Smith and to this day it is
still played on radio stations throughout the world when the sun shines, it is a timeless classic and a tune that
almost certainly made people aware of rap music in Britain.
The late 1990’s saw Eminem take over the charts, being one of the highest selling rappers of all time, worldwide
selling over seventy million albums. Eminem has won Grammy awards, his controversial have appealed to the young but
sometimes attracted unwelcome media attention. There have been many hip hop acts to have hits in the charts through
the 1990s to present day but the greatest ever hip hop artists are considered to be (in no particular order), Run
DMC, Notorious BIG, A tribe called quest, Salt N Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, NWA, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, 2
Pack Eric B and Rankim.
There are some hip hop artists which have mastered the ability to be cool along with appealing to all.
Some rap artists have moved on to further their career in film, Will Smith is just one of these artists, he has
gone on to the big screen and been a global success with a films such as I am Legend, Men in Black, Independence
Day, The persuit of happiness and Hancock to name but a few.
All of these films are available on DVD rental (DVD Verleih) from companies on the internet who provide a mailing DVDs (DVD Versand) service.
